College & Career Readiness

The primary emphasis of  College & Career Readiness (formerly Basic Skills) is to improve English language skills, computer skills, basic reading, writing, and math.

MG阿拉德之怒官网These programs help prepare students for further education and job training. Classes may be individualized, computer enhanced, or offered in small groups.

College & Career Readiness Outcomes

  • Students will develop basic academic skills in reading, writing and math.
  • Students will develop basic academic success and employment skills in the areas of teamwork, managing time, knowing how to learn new things, adhering to rules and deadlines and using computer technology.

English Language Acquisition (Formerly ESL)

English Language Acquisition (formerly ESL) classes are for non- or limited English-speaking adults who want to learn English. Classes combine listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on listening and speaking skills. ELA classes prepare students to continue with their education in English or secure employment. As students develop English language skills they transition into Adult Basic Education classes.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

MG阿拉德之怒官网Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes prepare students to either earn a high school diploma or take the GED exam. Students can take ABE classes in math, reading, writing, science, history, computers, art, PE and health. Students can also earn high school credit in ABE classes. As students complete their studies in ABE they are ready to either enroll in college level courses or find employment.

General Equivalency Development(GED)

YVC offers the GED high school equivalency exam at both the Yakima and Grandview campuses along with non-credit courses intended to prepare students for the GED test. GED Preparation is offered to students interested in studying for the GED exam through individualized and classroom support.  The GED test is for adult residents of this state, at least 19 years of age, who have not graduated from high school, have not received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate, and are not currently enrolled in a regular high school.

High School+ (HS+)

MG阿拉德之怒官网Students who are 18 years of age or older can earn high school credit from Adult Basic Education or college-level courses in order to earn an adult high school diploma. All courses lead directly into YVC credit-bearing college courses.

MG阿拉德之怒官网As students show competency in specific subject areas, YVC will grant high school credit. YVC recognizes high school credits students have previously earned. Students may also be able to earn high school credit based on prior knowledge through training and/or work experience. Students can earn the rest of the credits they need by taking classes at YVC. Upon completion of their high school diploma, students can enroll directly into credit-bearing college level courses.

Step Up to College (SUTC)

The Step Up to College​ program allows students ages 16-20 from Grandview, Mabton, Toppenish, Kittitas, and Ellensburg school districts to earn a high school diploma or GED.

For individuals living within the Grandview, Mabton, Toppenish, Kittitas, and Ellensburg school district boundaries who:

  • will not graduate from high school on time because they have not earned enough high school credits,
  • will turn 21 years of age before they graduate from high school, or
  • are former high school students, under the age of 21, who did not graduate and are now trying to earn a high school diploma.

Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST)

Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) pairs a professional or technical program with Adult Basic Education courses; including reading, writing, and math skills.  I-BEST provides educational access and support for students to progress further and faster along career pathways. I-BEST students can work on improving their basic educational skills while also earning college-level credit. Students participating in I-BESTMG阿拉德之怒官网 can receive specialized financial aid and academic support services.

CTE Dual Credit

CTE Dual Credit classes are taught at your high school or skills center and integrates academics with technical development to help prepare you for careers related to professional/technical occupations. High school students have the opportunity to get a jump start on their career by preparing for a college technical degree program while at their local high school.

MG阿拉德之怒官网All CTE (career and technical education) Dual Credit courses offer dual credit, meaning students earn high school and college credit for successfully completing the same class. You can earn both high school and community college credit (this is called dual credit) for completing select high school courses with a grade “B+” or better.

Requesting a High School Diploma when completing an Associate Degree

MG阿拉德之怒官网You can earn your high school diploma at a community or technical college and request a high school diploma when completing an associate degree or certificate under the following conditions:

  • An individual 21 years or older, who earns any type of associate degree from a Washington State community and technical college shall be awarded a state high school diploma from the college upon written request from the student.
  • An individual enrolled through Running Start who satisfactorily completes any type of associate degree from a Washington State community and technical college shall be awarded a state high school diploma from the college upon written request from the student.
  • SHB 1758 was approved by the legislature and took effect July 2009 in order to expand options for students to earn high school diplomas.
